Statement of NOW PAC Chair Kim Gandy on the Selection of Sarah Palin as John McCain's Vice Presidential Pick

Sen. John McCain's choice of Alaska governor Sarah Palin as his running mate is a cynical effort to appeal to disappointed Hillary Clinton voters and get them to vote, ultimately, against their own self-interest.

Gov. Palin may be the second woman vice-presidential candidate on a major party ticket, but she is not the right woman. Sadly, she is a woman who opposes women's rights, just like John McCain.

The fact that Palin is a mother of five who has a 4-month-old baby, a woman who is juggling work and family responsibilities, will speak to many women. But will Palin speak FOR women? Based on her record and her stated positions, the answer is clearly No.

In a gubernatorial debate, Palin stated emphatically that her opposition to abortion was so great, so total, that even if her teenage daughter was impregnated by a rapist, she would "choose life" -- meaning apparently that she would not permit her daughter to have an abortion.

Palin also had to withdraw her appointment of a top public safety commissioner who had been reprimanded for sexual harassment, although Palin had been warned about his background through letters by the sexual harassment complainant.

What McCain does not understand is that women supported Hillary Clinton not just because she was a woman, but because she was a champion on their issues. They will surely not find Sarah Palin to be an advocate for women.

Sen. Joe Biden is the VP candidate who appeals to women, with his authorship and championing of landmark domestic violence legislation, support for pay equity, and advocacy for women around the world.

Finally, as the chair of NOW's Political Action Committee, I am frequently asked whether NOW supports women candidates just because they are women. This gives me an opportunity to once again answer that question with an emphatic 'No.' We recognize the importance of having women's rights supporters at every level but, like Sarah Palin, not every woman supports women's rights.

_____

Palin is a nightmare - she's also of course a homophobic ... let's hope Obama wins the presidency, or America is definitely doomed.

"Speaking of Sarah Palin, she said she's a life-long member of the National Rifle Association. Which may explain why she's in favor of shotgun weddings."
--Conan O'Brien

"She does know about international relations because she is right up there in
Alaska, right next door to Russia." –FOX News Channel's Steve Doocy, gushing over Palin's qualifications, to which Jon Stewart quipped, "When you think about it, Alaska is also near the North Pole, so she must also be friends with Santa."

Well, Palin's good for comedy anyway - even if she's good for nothing else.

A: from AOL:
In her 2006 song 'Dear Mr. President,' Pink asked George W. Bush a few probing questions. Now she's got some choice words for a certain vice presidential candidate.

"If I were writing a letter to Sarah Palin," Pink told PopEater during her Sessions taping on Thursday, "it would be a lot of whys and hows. Who are you? Do you know? Why do you hate animals? Please point out Iraq on a map ..."

What scares Pink are women who consider the Alaska governor's selection a feminist victory. "This woman hates women," the singer said. "She is not a feminist. She is not the woman that's going to come behind Hillary Clinton and do anything that Hillary Clinton would've been capable of ... I can't imagine overturning Roe vs. Wade. She's not of this time. The woman terrifies me."

A: From the Modesto Bee:
"John McCain's risky choice of Sarah Palin apparently succeeded in rallying the right-wing base of the party, and probably also won back most of the doubters among fundamentalist Christians.

Interestingly, Palin left out of her rousing speech her ultraconservative policy positions: Her opposition to abortion even in the case of rape or incest, her advocacy of creationism in the schools, her opposition to sex education in the schools except for abstinence only."

[and we can see how well abstinence worked for her daughter! Now, there will be a 'shot-gun wedding'.]

"She referred to the Iraq war as "God's task." She's in the pockets of the big oil industry, and doubts the human effect on global warming, even when it's right under her nose in Alaska. If McCain thought he could win over Hillary Clinton supporters with the choice of Palin, he has insulted the intelligence of all the women who supported Hillary Clinton."
__

Palin is also one who believes in censorship - wanted books off library shelf, (probably Harry Potter?), but the librarian refused. Palin, power-trippin' fundy bitch that she is, tried getting the librarian fired, but citizens supported the librarian, and she wasn't fired. I hear the librarian has since left town - who can blame her when you've got the shrill dick-whipped Palin power-tripping all the time.

So Hurrah for Heather Mallick ! You go girl; tell it like it is!
"Canadian journalist Heather Mallick is facing an ugly onslaught from the U.S. right-wing media and its fans for an online column she wrote mocking Sarah Palin as "white trash." Fox News picked up on the column this week and unleashed its full fury on Mallick for stating that Palin, the Republicans' vice-presidential nominee, appeals to "the white trash vote" with her "toned-down version of the porn actress look."

:-D The right-wing nut-jobs are so hypocritical - they made all kinds of sexist remarks about Hillary, as well as Obama's wife - they made racist comments, too. So why the hell should we not string Palin up? Fight fire with fire.

McCain is an idiot (and sexist) and so is Palin; they are NOT for women at all - they just try to brainwash people into thinking it. Notice though that Palin never mentions what should be done to rapists - oh no, as long as women are victimized again, after being raped (forced to have a rapists child), men can just do no wrong! boys will be boys and all that patriarchal crappola. Why not castration? If you are going to be so extreme as regards women victims, why not be extreme as regards the criminal? Or perhaps Palin thinks rape victims should marry the rapist? Or he should pay child support?

Palin doesn't give a damn for all the women, men and children killed in Iraq, nor all the American soldiers killed, so how the hell can she be pro-life? She, following patriarchal rules, just wants to 'control' women - that's what the anti-abortion agenda really is about - because they don't give a shit what happens to children 'after' they are born - just before. So it's not pro-life at all. Meanwhile, lots of kids in the U.S. are starving, abused, etc., but Palin doesn't care - as long as women are 'controlled' as regards when they are pregnant, that's all she, and McCain care about. They are anti-women in every way, as well as homophobic (most people who are sexist tend to also be homophobic).

So vote Obama, or the U.S.A. is going down, down, down..... back to the dark ages.
