The North Pole could melt , we are on an axis that wobbles and it may be that time . I am not to familiar with Astronomy, the Earth has gone through major changes many times.

A: Hi Judith,
I think you're right. The poles have changed in the past.
Did you watch the Youtube video on World Population?
This subject is of interest to me for a couple of reasons...
not the least of which is how religious doctrine might be preventing
cultures from coming together to solve pressing planetary ressource problems (fresh water, fuel, aerable land...).

I am interested in grassroots exchange across religious barriers as to what, in religious doctrinal belief can be relaxes, let go of, in the interest of disparate groups cooperating to solve the problems of population replacement and growth throughout the planet.

A: Hello Indie Anna,

I am glad to see you coming back, and I hope that your summer is a pleasant one.

"Religion..... Global Populations ...... & Planet Concerns " ???

ALL...Religions throughout the history been run by a group of people [as the holy leaders], those been given the authorities [total authority], to run , according to their beliefs, God’s business on His PLANET, and it is POPULATION, and they came under many different names, [Monk, Priest, Pope, Imam etc.] . They claim that they are the only ones who understand God’s words, and His holy books and His messages, and their words and judgements cannot be questioned.

Those religion leaders and their mentalities and the way of running their business, hardly changed in time, they are today, and in the 21st century as they were in the first century or the centuries before it !!!. Do not let the outside looks fools us. Even with all the modern touch, clothing, cars, and the fancy colorful shows, and the fancy talk, all that no more than a show business to outgrow the opponent parties, by numbers [POPULATION], and by the size which they control from the PLANET.

Religion are limited to what came in the books, which were written by people in their time, and their time is different than any time that came after , and we should not depend solely on books which been written thousands of years ago to run our life in the 21st century.

Dear Indie, last night we watched a movie called “ INHERIT THE WIND” (Spencer Tracy) 1960, and it is a real story about a teacher who been Jailed for teaching the theory of Darwin about the evolution. This film brings the way of how the religious people deals with the scientific matters and try to stop any progress .
The lawyer who defended the teacher brought the works of the Irish Archbishop “Acher” who claims that the earth was created in 4004 BC, and gave the date as October 23, also he pointed to the story of creation that came in the Genesis, which the earth was created before the sun and the stars, and many other things which cannot be accepted by logic or science, and how the religious lawyer and the priest and the people of the church try condemn the teacher because he teaching Darwin theory, while they are showing that they accept Acher’s theory which been proved that it was wrong.

God bless you.

Hello Dear Sam.

Nice to read your words once again.

You mention two things :

A) the fact that, historically, religious institutions are an appendage of political institutions and that they help to fashion and carry out the plan of governments.

B) the movie, Inherit The Wind, with actor Spencer Tracy.

I will comment on (B) first.

I saw this film, Inherit The Wind, for the first time only a couple of years ago. Our grocery stores in Quebec (Provigo) have DVD stands that offer old movies in DVD form. When I saw the face of the actor I knew (Tracy), because he was one of my mother's favourite actors, because I'd never seen this movie, I bought it. I read the synopsis on the back of the DVD.
I thought, Okay, this might be interesting.

But I never expected that the script for this 1960 movie would be what it is : that is based on actual transcripts of the court case, superbly adapted to the screen, and one of Spencer Tracy's classic performances!

Of course, one has to be in a mood for a movie with a lot of dialogue, and I mean a LOT of dialogue; so, the viewer's brain has to be keen and one's ears turned for 'maximum reception'. And, it helps if the viewer have a bit of knowledge of the Old Testament writings.

To wit, the title of the movie is a quote of Proverbs 11, 29 :
"He that troubleth his own house shall inherit the wind : and the fool shall be servant to the wise of heart."

Ah, Gene Kelly's performance, as the news paper reporter, is also a good performance. Frederic March, the 'religious' lawyer, gives an amazing performance, just amazing.

What surprised me most about the movie?

That the point of discussion, evolutionism versus creationist, is STILL such a hot topic in the US. I am still amazed that the argument is still going on.

It is like Galileo and Einstein never lived.

The use of the movie for today? I think teachers can present the movie to any class today and get the kids to research how pertinent or how timely the discussion still can be. You can’t do that with many movies made in 1960.

So, I have to agree with you that this movie is worth watching, if only to get a grasp of the historical legal battle surrounding the teaching of evolution in the classroom.

Another movie, a little movie, which you might have fun commenting on is the US movie entitled ‘The Princess And The Marine’ (2001).
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0272255/plotsummary
“Based on a true story, American Marine Jason Johnson is sent on assignment to the Emirate of Bahrain. While there, he meets and falls in love with a spirited, lovely young woman, Meriam, without realizing she is really a member of the Bahraini Royal Family. Meriam, who does not wish to consent to an arranged marriage, knows her love affair with Jason is dangerous, as he is a Mormon Christian and she a Muslim. Her parents would never consent to their match, and so Meriam and Jason race against time to escape Bahrain and make it to the United States, where they can marry. ”

The reason I think you might have fun commenting on this movie, Sam, is because the young woman in the story, in my view, is exchanging one strict religious world for another, in that she goes from the world of arranged marriages in Islam, to the VERY structured Mormon religious world, possibly more narrow (in some ways) than the world she grew up in.

I would be interested in talking to her in 20 years, when she has had time to mature in her views on religion. The world view that Mormonism had, its view and interpretation of the Creation stories of the Bible are as strict as the view held, in Inherit The Wind, by the ‘religious’ lawyer (the lawyer for the prosecution).

All in all, I find we come back to the common denominator : text analysis; for me, all religious discussion roads lead to text analysis, good old exegesis. Which is why I think the planet will not get a handle on population stabilization unless we first take Bible and Koran Exegesis 101, so to speak.

And now I go to

Your other point :

Historically, religious institutions are an appendage of political institutions and that they help to fashion and carry out the plan of governments

Sam, when we look at the history of Quebec, at how the Catholic Church had a very big role in the fashioning of the history of the French Canadian people, we note two things :

(i) In 1759, when the British won the battle on the Plaines in Quebec City, the Catholic Church became the institution that insured the cultural survival of the French Canadian people. So, we have a lot to be thankful for to the Catholic Church.

(ii) On the other hand, in the 1950s, the French intellectuals in Montreal began a push to gain economic control of our natural resources, a push to prevent the extinction of French as thriving language in North America, and a push to decrease the influence by the Catholic Church on our social laws (laws on marriage, divorce, abortion…)

Since the 1970s, another ‘split’ has happened :

Once the survival of the French language had been achieved in French Canada, once the influence of the Church on social policies had been removed, the next question was how far should French Canadian nationalism go?

Some feel that getting control of our natural resources in Quebec (our hydro-electric power), investing money in French higher education was enough. Others in Quebec believe in something called ‘sovereignty-association’. The debate continues on what powers should be held by Canada’s national government and what powers should be held by Canada’s Provinces. The leaders of Canada’s Province of Quebec (the main French speaking entity in all the Americas) continues this ‘conversation’ with the people.

I think that we, as well a many other cultural groups (the Serbes, the Croatians, the Irish, the Berbers…), probably ALL the countries of the world in fact, who have different cultural entities within our borders, need to re-evaluate how central and regional administrations share power. I think that many in Canada, though they have heard the term ‘sovereignty-association’ so often since René Levesque came up with the idea, still do not have a true idea of what it means. Those who control the various branches of mass media seem to think it is okay to keep the masses ignorant and they contribute to the dumbing of the masses by reverting to a reductionist tug-of-war of words and use only the words ‘separatism’ and ‘federalism’. It would be nice if we could resurrect Trudeau & Lévesque and have them on a weekly tv show discussing the issues, and help educate the population as to the nuances of the discussion.

But, you are right : all societies seem to be struggling with the inability to come to terms with religion and how it impacts us; I think this is true even in the secularized Province of Quebec. Our young people thirst for meaning, for the ‘communion’ that rituals used to bring. Mere discussion on points of philosophy, or ethics, is not enough. We need that ‘communion’, we need ritual.

Voilà. I must get going on planning my fall activities. Holidays are over now.

Hope this message finds you well. My best to your family.

Take care, my Friend.

A: Dear Indie Anna,
Hello,

Thank you for your post. It seams to me, that we are alone after all, and I do really miss all the friends, those I share with them a lot of thoughts in so many different subjects, and I will never forget them, God bless them.

I wake up early this morning to make the coffe, and to prepare sandwishes, and some snacks for my wife. After I took her to the "GO TRAIN" station. She is going to spend the whole day at the CNE - EXHIBITION In Toronto.
I did not join her because of a health reason, 12 hours is too long for me.
Tomorrow we both are going to the casino in NIAGRA FALLS.
In good sunny days we spend time on the lake where there are many beautifu parks.
The summer is short and we try to take as much advantage from it as we can, our activities in the fall are less, and in the winter we are close to 'hibernate'.

Ramada [the Muslims fasting month] started last saturday, and none of us [me, my wife, my son] ever fasted, but the only one who did fasten is Kelly, our daughter -in-law, and believe me none of us ever asked her why, and she never told us if she became Muslim, Her dad 'David, and her mom 'jean' and her uncle 'Datezell' will be visiting them the coming wedsesday , for one week.
Last night, my son called , and asked for a receip which Muslims prepare mostly at this time.

My best wishes to you and your family, and good luck at your work.

Keep in touch, I will be checking this site regularly.

By the way, we live in Mississauge [around 50 km west of Toronto], And if you have a chance to visit this area, we will be glad to welcome you in our home, just let me know.

God bless you my friend Indie.

Thursday August 27th 2009

Good morning Sam.

I have not been to Toronto in years and do not have the chance to go very much. But, if we go, I would be pleased to let you know and to stop for tea with you and your wife.

I hope you have a nice time in Niagara.

I did not know it was Ramadan now.
I was in Jerusalem in July in 1980 during Ramadan.
Fasting is not something I do often, but on occasion I will for a day or so.

I asked the design team for this site to make a change that might help to increase the participation. I have not heard back from them.

Have a nice day.
