Kambouris/GettyPhysicist Stephen Hawking writes in his new book, 'The Grand Design,' that God did not create the universe, because gravity means it would have happened on its own. Related NewsArticlesHumans: Move to space or go extinct, says Stephen HawkingStephen Hawking: Contact with aliens could get us killedWhen it came to the creation of the Universe, God just wasn't necessary.

That's the conclusion renowned scientist Stephen Hawking has made in his latest tome, "The Grand Design," set to hit book sellers next week.

"It is not necessary to invoke God to light the blue touch paper and set the Universe going," Hawking writes, according to an excerpt featured in London's The Times.

The Big Bang was a natural event which would have happened without the help or involvement of God, he argues.

"Because there is a law such as gravity, the Universe can and will create itself from nothing," Hawking writes.

"Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the Universe exists, why we exist," he says.

The discovery of other planets and solar systems outside of our own, which has increased since the early 1990s, helped shape Hawking's belief that the earth and it's neighbors were not divinely developed.

"That makes the coincidences of our planetary conditions – the single sun, the lucky combination of Earth-sun distance and solar mass – far less remarkable, and far less compelling as evidence that the Earth was carefully designed just to please us human beings," he writes.

Scientists, including Albert Einstein, generally did not rule out the involvement of a higher being when it comes to the creation of the universe. Even Hawking did not exclude the possibility in his earlier book, "A Brief History of Time."

Isaac Newton, who developed the theory of gravity, historically argued that his science could only explain so much of the universe's behavior, but not its creation.

"Gravity explains the motions of the planets, but it cannot explain who set the planets in motion," he wrote.

Hawking retired as Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge University last year after 30 years, a position once held by Newton.

A: v v k , You wrote, in your other post:

"It seems to me that the idea of a personal God is an anthropological concept which I cannot take seriously......"- ALBERT EINSTEIN (scientist, Nobel Prize winner in physics, originator of the theory of relativity.)

In my answer to that, I brought Einstein own words:
"When Einstein heard of HUBBLE'S DISCOVERY *,
HE SAID THAT CHANGING HIS EQUATIONS WAS "THE BIGGEST BLUNDER OF HIS LIFE".

v v k, do you understand what the word BLUNDER means?

In this post, you brought another great scientist:
- Physicist Stephen Hawking writes in his new book, 'The Grand Design,' that God did not create the universe, because gravity means it would have happened on its own.

When we say THE UNIVERSE, that for sure means everything in it, from solid to liquid to gases etc.,, and also includes any other forms that might come from these matters, and what it made from them.
My questions: IsTHE EARTH IN TOTAL is a part of this universe which Hawking talking about ?,
and is the life forms on THIS EARTH are of part of Hawking's universe, or not?
IF THE UNIVERSE WAS CREATED / HAPPENED BY IT IS OWN GRAVITY, CAN THAT BE THE SAME & GOES FOR THE CREATION, LIFE / LIVING THAT HAPPENED ON THE EARTH BY GRAVITY?,

The most important element for life is "THE WATER" regardless of gravity. Scientists when looking for life in other planet they have to look if there is water or not. ASTRONAUTS, they can live in ZERO GRAVITY, but they will not live without water and food, and the food itself [from any tipe] will not grow without water, but can grow without gravity.

IT WOULD HAPPEN ON ITS OWN !!!. LIFE ON EARTH OR IN OTHER PLANET CANNOT HAPPEN AND WILL NEVER HAPPEN WITHOUT WATER, AND THAT IS A FACT.

Have those who disbelieved not considered THAT THE HEAVENS AND THE EARTH WERE A JOINED ENTITY, AND WE SEPARATE THEM AND MADE FROM WATER EVERY LIVING THING ? then will they not believe?. Q-21:30

All scientists of the 21st century accept THE FACT that our universe came from A JOINED ENTITY, and after the BIG BANG been separated to form our today's universe, and our universe is EXPANDING, and the water is assential for any form of life. AND THAT IS WHAT THE QURAN TOLD US BEFORE 1400 YEARS AGO.

v v k, The human race on this planet earth, IF either they came through evolution or by creation , and in that long period [thousands or millions of years], and between then [the beginning] and the time when the Quran came, just before only 1400 years ago, with the information about the creation of the universe and what is in it, all that time the human had no knowledge about their world, their universe !!!, But IF you come to Mention the Greek or the Roman, you will be wrong, because both they did not know the origin or the expantion of the universe, and IF you bring the Bible, the Bible story is that the sun and the stars were crated after the earth, and there were living even before the sun was created. DO YOU ECCEPT THATAS TRUE ?.

AND WE MADE THE SKY A PROTECTED CEILING,.... 21:32
- Did the theory of Hawking ever thought of the OZONE ?, and was the many layers of the earth atmosphere was the result of the gravity creation?

And it is HE, [THE CREATOR] who created the night and the day AND THE SUN AND THE MOON; ALL HEAVENLY BODIES IN AN ORBIT ARE SWIMMING. 21:33
.......... THERE AFTER YOU ADDED.......

The discovery of other planets and solar systems outside of our own, which has increased since the early 1990s, helped shape Hawking's belief that the earth and it's neighbors were not divinely developed.

............ WHAT YOU ANDERSTAND & WHAT YOU DON'T ......

YOU UNDERSTAND Mr. Hawking theory, that the universe created by gravity, and now you brought the fact that there are many planets discovered after 1990, in which Hawking has nothing to do with it, but as for Einstein and Mr. Hubble these knowledge is not known to them ,because these discoveries came as you said in 1990 and after many decades from their death [1953.1955], and we can say that every great scientist is only great is his limited field, and even IF you bring all the scientist of the world and all their sciences they will be short in knowing the total knowledge of the creation and the dimension of this universe. Not even IF all the people on earth were great scientists !!!.

IN 1990 THE FIRST KNOWLEDGE OF THE EXISTANCE OF PLANETS IN OUR UNIVERSE CAME TO BE KNOWN , AND SO THE BIG BANG , AND THE EXPANDING UNIVERSE, AND YOU ACCEPT THE WORKS OF THE 20TH CENTURY MAN/SCIENTIST WITHOUT ANY QUESTION !!!, BUT YOU WILL DENY ANYTHING ELSE, EVEN IF TI CAME FROM THE CREATOR HIMSELF, AND WHEN IT GIVE YOU THE SAME INFORMATION , AND BEFORE 1400 YEARS !!!.

MAN CAN BE GREAT SCIENTIST IN HIS FIELD, BUT WHEN HE CLAIM OR EVER THINKS THAT HE KNOWS THE FULL TRUTH ABOUT HOW THE UNIVERSE CREATED, AND HOW THE LIFE ON THE EARTH STARTED, THEN THAT MAN IS A DUMP & STUPID.

YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND, that all the information and the discoveries of 20th centuries been mentioned before 1400 years ago:

IT IS GOD [ ALLAH / THE CREATOR ] WHO HAS CREATED SEVEN HEAVENS AND OF THE EARTH, THE LIKE OF THEM. Quran 65:12

Did you understand what this verse from the Quran means. It mean in a plain English that GOD CREATED OTHER PLANETS LIKE THE EARTH, which is proven at this time as planet, but AFTER TIME for sure they will find THE FULL TRUTH.

AND YOU WILL SURELY KNOW THE TRUTH OF ITS INFORMATION AFTER TIME. Quran 38:88

What came in the Quran is not the words of Muhammad, and those information are far beyond the knowledge of the people at that time [Abraham, Moses, Jesus , Buddha and Muhammad, and the billions who lived on earth], even they were far beyond of the knowledge of Einstein, but the truth is that you accept the words of Einstein and Hawking, and you deny the words of God even if it were bringing the truth !!!.

DO THEY NOT SEE THAT GOD, WHO CREATED THE HEAVENS AND EARTH, IS ABLE TO CREATE THE LIKES OF THEM ?. Quran 17:99
Can you see, that the discovery of planet proves what God told us?

THIS IS THE CREATION OF GOD. SO SHOW ME WHAT THOSE OTHER THAN HIM HAVE CREATED. Quran 31:11

God tells us of HIS creation of the universe and what is in it, so, Mr. v v k , can you tell of anything that man created , beside inventing thounsand of theories ?.

"O PEOPLE, AN EXAMPLE IS PRESENTED, SO LISTEN TO IT.
(v v k, please listen)
INDEED, THOSE YOU INVOKE BESIDES ALLAH [GOD] WILL NEVER CREATE [AS MUCH AS] A FLY, EVEN IF THEY GATHERED TOGETHER FO IT [i.e., that purpose]. AND IF THE FLY SHOULD STEAL FROM THEM A TINY THING, THEY COULD NOT RECOVER IT FROM IT.
WEAK ARE THE PERSUER AND PERSUED. " Quran 22:73

A: "As we shall see, the concept of time has no meaning before the beginning of the universe. This was first pointed out by St. Augustine. When asked: What did God do before he created the universe? Augustine didn't reply: He was preparing Hell for people who asked such questions. Instead, he said that time was a property of the universe that God created, and that time did not exist before the beginning of the universe."

Stephen Hawking, A Brief History of Time (New York: Bantam, 1988), p. 8

"One can imagine that God created the universe at literally any time in the past. On the other hand, if the universe is expanding, there may be physical reasons why there had to be a beginning. One could imagine that God created the universe at the instant of the big bang, or even afterwards in just such a way as to make it look as though there had been a big bang, but it would be meaningless to suppose that it was created before the big bang. An expanding universe does not preclude a creator, but it does place limits on when he might have carried out his job!"

A Brief History of Time (New York: Bantam, 1988), pp. 8-9.

"With the success of scientific theories in describing events, most people have come to believe that God allows the universe to evolve according to a set of laws and does not intervene in the universe to break these laws. However, the laws do not tell us what the universe should have looked like when it started -- it would still be up to God to wind up the clockwork and choose how to start it off. So long as the universe had a beginning, we could suppose it had a creator. But if the universe is really completely self-contained, having no boundary or edge, it would have neither beginning nor end: it would simply be. What place, then, for a creator?"

A Brief History of Time (New York: Bantam, 1988), p. 140-41.

"However, if we discover a complete theory, it should in time be understandable by everyone, not just by a few scientists. Then we shall all, philosophers, scientists and just ordinary people, be able to take part in the discussion of the question of why it is that we and the universe exist. If we find the answer to that, it would be the ultimate triumph of human reason -- for then we should know the mind of God."

A Brief History of Time - (page 193 - actually the concluding paragraph!)

In a later work Black Holes and Baby Universes and other Essays, 1993 Stephen Hawking revealed that A Brief History of Time remained on the bestseller list of The New York Times for fifty-three weeks, that as of February 1993 it had been on The Sunday Times best seller list for 205 weeks, and that translations into 33 languages other than English had already been published.
Also in Black Holes and Baby Universes, Hawking goes so far as to attribute a marked increase in sales to this - discovery of a complete theory of everything - means - knowing the mind of God - quotation which was probably from his point a view nothing more than a metaphor indicative of an understanding of the universe which was complete and objective.
"In the proof stage I nearly cut the last sentence in the book... Had I done so, the sales might have been halved."
As sales of A Brief History of Time currently stand at over nine million copies Prof. Hawkings decision not to edit out that sentence may have had notable consequences.

"What I have done is to show that it is possible for the way the universe began to be determined by the laws of science. In that case, it would not be necessary to appeal to God to decide how the universe began. This doesn't prove that there is no God, only that God is not necessary."

Der Spiegel (17 October 1988)

In October 2001 an article appeared in the London-based Telegraph newspaper wherein Prof. Hawking was represented as being interviewed "about life, the universe and everything".
In this article the Prof. was asked the following:-

You use God as a metaphor for the laws of nature but, from what I remember, you are not religious in any way. Is this still the case?

And Prof. Hawkings reply was:- "If you believe in science, like I do, you believe that there are certain laws that are always obeyed. If you like, you can say the laws are the work of God, but that is more a definition of God than a proof of his existence."

In June of 2010 Channel 4 aired a series themed as "Genius of Britain" where, according to Stephen Hawking, several British figures prominent in scientific fields sought “to tell the stories of the British scientists who changed the world, and to put science back on the map.”

During the recording of this series Professor Hawking was asked whether he thought God existed.
Hawkings reply, which like most of his statements had to be painstakingly pre-prepared and installed for playback through his voice synthesiser, was as follows:-

"The question is: is the way the universe began chosen by God for reasons we can't understand, or was it determined by a law of science? I believe the second. If you like, you can call the laws of science 'God', but it wouldn't be a personal God that you could meet, and ask questions."
