Q: It seems that ancient jews kept good records of their family records, couldn't you check to see if there are any families with similar names at the same time

A: Apparently, most of the Jewish records were destroyed with the temple in Jerusalem, about 69-70 AD.

A: Romans would have been the census takers at the time of Jesus and they were meticulous. I don't know how it could be done but I think that would be the route to take for this info.
