The dicovery channel, one of my favourites. has produced a documentary proclaiming that the tomb of Jesus has been found!
Is this claim valid? the answer is no. when the tomb was first discovered in 1980 the original archeologist recorded all the names found there, noted each of them and went on with about their archeological work and careers making no such claim. in the mid 1990's the BBC came along made a documentary proclaiming this is the tomb of Jesus and there was an outcry from the scholar community that sent that documentary quickly to oblivion. why? because the names of Mary, Jesus, and Joseph were some of the most common in the era of 1st century Judea and Galilee
But lets look at the names found there. first, the one and only inscription that was done in greek. the one that producers claim is Mary Magdalene's final resting place... But does it say Mary Magdalene there? absolutely not. it says
Mary known as Master
Mariamene e Mara
Quick difference from Mary of Magdala (sorry if wrong spelling) Mary of Magdalene. But why would they say this is Mary Magdalene? well they called a Harvard scholar saying that the early Christians referred to Mary Magdalene by this title on name. Did they? Mathew Mark Luke and John used the Greek Mary of Magdala or Mary the Magdalene. Not Mary known as Master. and then they quote a Harvard scholar as referring to the axe of Philip.
A late 4th century and early 5th century work of religious fiction (this is sort of a combination of the chronicles of Narnia and the lord of the rings! replete with dragons and talking animals) and it tells about the story of Philip and his SISTER Mary THE STRONG going around evangelizing the 1st century... (the stories are incredible. they would make a good animated movie) but they certainly don't reflect on Mather Mark Luke John. but even there this Mary is NOT in this 5th century document referring to Mary Magdalene. at least not in the earlier versions, about the third of that document has been lost. you can find it in the internet simply by googling: The Axe of Philip text
The scholars of Harvard however found a 14th century version and copy of it thats expanded and perhaps there there is some illusion to this Mary being also Mary Magdalene. BUT i am just a country theologian i certainly don't see it, so whats written on that box does not say Mary of Magdala.
But now lets look at the next very important inscription. in ancient Aramaic scratched on the box that supposedly contained the bones of Jesus Of Nazareth. It says Jesus son of Joseph, most scholars agreed thats what the inscription said. but ancient semedic (correct me if i am wrong) inscriptions are NOTORIOUSLY hard to interpret. One scholar at least, from the university of the Holy Land found in Jerusalem Stephen Pfann says he believes that it doesn't say "Jesus son of Joseph" but more like "Hanun son of Joseph" which if thats the case the documentary immediately collapses. but even if it does say Jesus son of Joseph many names have been found on many ancient tombs because their names were so common. but even here we have to be careful because we only know the name Jesus in the new testament in its Greek form and we DON'T know of which version of Aramaic Jesus used in describing himself. there weren't many versions, the same with the name Mary... there are at least 13 more variations of the name Mary in ancient semedic languages. And these two knocks their statistical studies out of line. because there is just no way of knowing of how Mary spelled her name in Aramaic or in Hebrew. So we have to be very cautious even there. but there is nothing in that tomb which REALLY CONVINCINGLY points any new testament figure. The name Matthew is used there BUT Matthew is not a relative of Jesus according to the new testament, documents and sources. also one of the producers is connected with the famous of infamous James the brother of the lord which actually brings up in this documentary. which was found to have fake inscriptions on the box by the Israeli department of antiquities. feud this documentary and do it with an active mind and your faith in Jesus will not be shaken (but your faith in documentary film makers might be) God bless you
PS: i do not own any of this things and this is only meant for people who are impatient or unable to reach the website

A: If it wasn't for all of the pros and cons, debates and doubts I think we could revel in the fact that a discovery this important could shed more light on the truth. It's always the winners who write the histories and anyone in power thinks they can change it for their goals and purposes. It's sad that academic facts can't be viewed objectively.I think there is enough evidence to prove who the occupents of the ossuaries were.May they rest in peace.
